Exegesis of Ephesians 5 21-33 - 2522 Words

Ephesians 5:21-33 p Principles of Biblical Interpretation RELI 3305 02 Instructor: W.B. Tolar December 8, 2011 Jordan R. Laessig Setting The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul (Ephesians 1:1) while in jail (Acts 28:16-31) between A.D. 60 and A.D. 62. While most agree that this letter was written to address the church of Ephesus, some scholars believe that because the name Ephesus was not mentioned in the book, Paul was writing to all churches in Asia Minor, and Ephesus was just the first to have the letter delivered. â€Å"Paul is born in Tarsus, a city of Cilicia (Acts xxii. 3, amp;c.): an Israelite, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew, i.e., one who spoke Hebrew (Phil. iii. 4, amp;c.); educated in Jerusalem under†¦show more content†¦This command sets the ground work for the next few verses and gives black and white instructions as to how a man must treat his wife and then how a wife must treat her husband. The verb in this passage is submission. Submission to one another and to the husband is emphasized through the command. Later on Paul uses love as his secondary verb. He commissions a man to love his wife as Christ loves the church. The receivers in the first section of this passage are our fellow brothers, which imply that everyone is the receiver. As we are to submit to everyone, they become the receivers of our submission. Then Paul uses husbands as the receivers of submission from the wives as the subject. Finally Paul uses wives as the receivers. Men are the subject and women are the receivers of love. Semantics There are a few key words that must be defined for accurate interpretation of this passage. The first significant word needing defined comes from 5:21. The word Submit comes from the Greek word á ½â„¢Ãâ‚¬ÃŽ ¿Ãâ€žÃŽ ±ÃÆ'ÏÆ'ÏÅ'ÃŽ ¼ÃŽ µÃŽ ½ÃŽ ¿ÃŽ ¹ meaning to bring under control, put in subjection. This would imply that the one submitting would be under complete and absolute control of the one he/she is submitting to. The second word needing identified is the word reverence, used in verse 21. This word is also found from the Greek text and is identified as φÏÅ'ÃŽ ²Ã¡ ¿ ³. The meaning for this use of the word is one of fear andShow MoreRelatedExegesis on Ephesians 6:1-31445 Words   |  6 PagesEXEGESIS PAPER ON EPHESIANS 6:1-3 ‘Children Obeying Honouring their parents is a right thing to do and bring blessings’ Background: Paul the author of this letter, realizing that the Ephesians were starting to forsake their first love, wrote this epistle to encourage them to love both God and their fellow saints. The play indicating Essay Example For Students

The play indicating Essay An Inspector Calls has been described as a well- made play. Discuss the description of the play indicating how far you agree with it. John Boynton Priestley was born in Bradford Yorkshire on the thirteenth of September eighteen-ninety four. At the age of sixteen, he left school and decided to enter University for a scholarship. Priestley had a clear picture of what he wanted to qualify in. He wanted a qualification of being a great and successful writer. In the year nineteen- eleven, people who liked to read surrounded Priestley, but amongst them were no such professional writers. All this persuaded Priestley to become prosperous. One Of Priestleys first novels was The Good Companions, and this book had become a best- seller, which made his writing career to become well and truly established. After this book, he went on writing his second novel, Angel Pavement, this book was published in 1930. An Inspector Calls was one of Priestleys early books. This book was set in 1912 and is an amazing book, which contains one of the first plays to be reputable by Priestley. This is a play published at the end of the Edwardian era and on the onset of the World War. We will write a custom essay on The play indicating specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now This marked a time of harmony and stability, which is included in the main themes of the play. J. B. Priestley sets the play in the fictional industrial city of Brumley, which reflects a type of escape from an unpleasant and uncertain future. The social and historical contexts of the play are equally important. Communal position was more important at that time than it is today. In the play we are never given a comprehensible set of political policies, but J. B Priestley does make the general point that all of us have a share in the responsibility for what happens in our society. In the play we are left wondering whether our society today is likely to survive a similarly close examination, like with the characters in the play. Throughout the nineteenth century there was a dramatic expansion of industry, which gave many men a chance to face considerable fortunes. Many of these industrialists were granted titles for their wealth, which helped them to improve their social standing. In this play, J. B Priestley comprises a family with a very big name. The family comes from humble origins, who innocently dont know what their unpredictable future is about to hold. The family initiated in the play are known as the Birlings. Mr. Arthur Birling lives with his wife Mrs. Sybil Birling, and their two children, Sheila Birling, their oldest daughter, and Eric Birling, their youngest son. Mr. Birling is a respected man, as he was an Alderman and a Lord Mayor quite some time before the play took place. In those days, having a Lord Mayor indicated the importance of a town. Arthur Birling clearly felt that his activities in local politics made him enough of a figure to justify his knighthood. I was an Alderman for years- and Lord Mayor two years ago- and Im still on the bench. Most of the action in the play happens in the Birlings dinning- room. The play is set out into three acts, and each act carries the idea of trust and suspense. In the first act of the play Mr. And Mrs. Birling are celebrating the happiness of their daughter, Sheila, who will be getting engaged to Gerald Croft. An Inspector Calls is known as a well- made play, because each of the characters that take part in the play, are perfectly adapted to their given speech. Mr. Birling is seen as a throwback to the insensitive Victorian times, but unfortunately he is too typical of the greedy employers of that time. Arthur is a businessman, who thinks of himself very superior and rich. .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 , .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .postImageUrl , .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 , .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1:hover , .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1:visited , .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1:active { border:0!important; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1:active , .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1 .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u429582a1ca69cc9bfe1f34a56bf1c5d1:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A Streetcar Named Desire EssayTherefore he feels responsible to make a success out of his business. Even though this may mean to pay his employers much less than they truly deserve. Arthur is described as a heavy- looking rather portentous man. This may be because of his size that helps to give him a threatening appearance. The number of women who were poor and in need of help was suggested by the existence of the Brumley Womens Charity Organisation with which Mrs. Birling is involved, though in the story, Mrs. Birling tends to lack her job. Mrs. Birling is described as a rather cold woman and her husbands social superior. Her coldness makes her seem as if she is out of touch with what happens and what really matters. Sheila Birling is described as a pretty girl in her early twenties, very pleased with life and rather excited. In the play Sheila is joining in with her family celebrating the happiness of the future couple, herself and Gerald Croft. The family are having a dinner party to rejoice the contentment of their daughter and their daughters imminent husband. In the beginning Sheila is really excited, whilst seeking all the attention from her family, and she is also aware of the exhilaration her engagement will bring her. Towards the end when she finds out the true hidden reality of Geralds life, she foolishly returns the engagement ring to Gerald before he leaves the house, just incase he decides not to come back. Even though she has foolish and selfish reactions towards Geralds response to the inspector, she has the potential to change and accept that she should at least appreciate her fianci telling her and her family the truth. Unlike his sister, Eric Birling is rather awkward, not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive. Eric does not seem to have his fathers approval, although his father tries to meet the family with all their needs. Eric is seen as a very young boy, who tends to drink much more than the normal average a boy should drink. Though he is not a particularly pleasant character, we may feel that he has learnt a lesson from the major event that happened in the evening of celebration, he is sincerely ashamed of his behaviour and he shows to us that he is capable of changing for the better in the future. Gerald Croft is the young man who will be getting engaged to Sheila Birling, up until the future calamity announces the legitimacy of his past life, which was meant to be personal. He is the son of the famous Sir George Croft. He is polite and tactful with Mr.and Mrs. Birling, and he has self- confidence with everyone around him no matter who they are. This is because when the inspector was asking him questions about the suicide of Eva Smith/ Daisy Renton, even though he kept quiet at first he did not hesitate to answer. Unlike Mr. Birling, Mrs. Birling and Eric. An Inspector Calls is a fast paced drama that consists of non- stop action and anticipation throughout all acts and scenes. Priestley presents this play to us with a sincerely felt and powerfully expressed social message. This is shown to us when comfortable family lifestyles, who have no worries what so ever, end up catastrophically. The play shows us how wealthy people, no matter how rich they are, they will always be part of an independent community. This is shown to us when a so- called Inspector, identified as Inspector Goole, champions the cause of the poor, by trying to get the rich Birling family to accept the fact that all people share a common humanity. Plays are performed, and the language used in the play tells us about the action that should be taking place. When reading a play we should be able to see the mood of the characters at the particular time. .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 , .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .postImageUrl , .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 , .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6:hover , .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6:visited , .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6:active { border:0!important; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6:active , .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6 .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9edcc0f1bcb6994ec752ce4a18b5f9b6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Drummer Hodge EssayThe language used reveals the character and sometimes there are times when what the characters says is in conflict with what the character does. In the play many of the characters reflect the hypocrisy which Priestley was condemning. In the play the inspector is described as, creating an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness. This is probably because the inspector grows as the stories of the characters are revealed. He remains solid and integral as each of them breaks down, and nothing the others do or say can distract him from his purpose.

Employees: Improve Your Skills! As many as 77%   of employers are determining their new hires based on soft skills like problem solving, communication, and ethics. They know that without these kinds of skills, on-the-job training is more difficult for managers  and colleagues alike. If you are good at problem-solving, then you know how to learn independently- you’ll improve and develop as an employee no matter what context you’re working in. When you get frustrated, you turn that into motivation to find the answer instead of giving up. You know how to maintain  your problem-solving â€Å"muscles† so that they that kick in whenever the going gets tough. In order to improve your abilities, Tim Murphy, founder of ApplyMate, recommends exercise books that give you brainteasers or word problems to solve- these are  low stakes opportuniti es to build your skill set.Employers:  Find and Nurture  this Important SkillAs an employer, Pomeroy recommends developing screening protocols for job applicants, like  tests that ask prospective hires to solve real problems they’re likely to face on the job. Hiring managers  could even build in a collaborative component by asking them to talk through issues with current employees. If you’re looking at your current employees and noticing crucial deficits, consider offering employee training with personal coaches or monthly professional development presentations. You can give your employees agency to identify and address their own areas for improvement. In addition, allowing them to give presentations in groups or alone will build their sense of self-sufficiency. Prioritize problem solving, and you’ll cultivate a workforce that knows how to work together and independently; eventually they’ll solve problems before they happen. How to Identify and Trai n the Skill That Matters MostRead More at TalentCulture World of Work

The Location and Legend of Alba Longa

The Location and Legend of Alba Longa Location and Legend Alba Longa was a region in the area of ancient Italy known as Latium. Although we dont know exactly where it was, since it was destroyed early in Roman history, it was traditionally founded at the foot of the Alban mountain about 12 miles southeast of Rome. A doublet legendary tradition, found in Livy, makes King Latinus daughter, Lavinia, the mother of Aeneass son Ascanius. The more familiar tradition credits Ascanius as the son of Aeneas first wife, Creusa. Creusa disappeared during the escape of the Trojan band led by Prince Aeneas, from the burning city of Troy the story told in Vergils Aeneid. (We know she died because her ghost makes an appearance.) Harmonizing the two accounts some ancient thinkers say there were two sons of Aeneas with the same name. Be that as it may, this Ascanius, wherever born and of whatever mother it is at any rate agreed that his father was Aeneas seeing that Lavinium was over-populated, left that city, now a flourishing and wealthy one, considering those times, to his mother or stepmother, and built himself a new one at the foot of the Alban mount, which, from its situation, being built all along the ridge of a hill, was called Alba Longa.Livy Book I In this tradition Ascanius founded the city of Alba Longa and the Roman king Tullus Hostilius   destroyed it. This legendary time period spans about 400 years. Dionysius of Halicarnassus (fl. c.20 B.C.)   provides a description of its founding along with a note about its contribution to Roman wine. To return to its founding, Alba was built near a mountain and a lake, occupying the space between the two, which served the city in place of walls and rendered it difficult to be taken. For the mountain is extremely strong and high and the lake is deep and large; and its waters are received by the plain when the sluices are opened, the inhabitants having it in their power to husband the supply as much as they wish. 3  Lying below the city are plains marvellous to behold and rich in producing wines and fruits of all sorts in no degree inferior to the rest of Italy, and particularly what they call the Alban wine, which is sweet and excellent and, with the exception of the Falernian, certainly superior to all others. The Roman Antiquities of Dionysius of Halicarnassus A famous legendary battle was fought under Tullus Hostilius. The outcome was decided by a variation on single combat. It was a battle between two sets of triplets, the Horatii brothers and the Curatii, perhaps respectively from Rome and Alba Longa. It happened that there were in the two armies at that time three brothers born at one birth, neither in age nor strength ill-matched. That they were called Horatii and Curiatii is certain enough, and there is hardly any fact of antiquity more generally known; yet in a manner so well ascertained, a doubt remains concerning their names, as to which nation the Horatii, to which the Curiatii belonged. Authors incline to both sides, yet I find a majority who call the Horatii Romans: my own inclination leads me to follow them.Livy Op. cit. Of the six young men, only one Roman was left standing. Dionysius of Halicarnassus describes what may have been the fate of the city: This city is now uninhabited, since in the time of Tullus Hostilius, king of the Romans, Alba seemed to be contending with her colony for the sovereignty and hence was destroyed; but Rome, though she razed her mother-city to the ground, nevertheless welcomed its citizens into her midst. But these events belong to a later time.Dionysius Op. cit. Survival The temples of Alba Longa were spared and its name was given to the lake, mountain (Mons Albanus, now Monte Cavo), and valley (Vallis Albana) in the area. The territory was named for Alba Longa, too, as it was called the ager Albanus a premium wine-growing region, as noted above. The area also produced Peperino, a volcanic stone considered a superior building material. Alba Longan Ancestry Several patrician families of Rome had Alban ancestors and are assumed to have come to Rome when Tullus Hostilius destroyed their hometown. Nelson Mandela Speech to the UN Special Committee against Apartheid Essay

Nelson Mandela Speech to the UN Special Committee against Apartheid - Essay Example Nelson Mandela Speech to the UN Special Committee against Apartheid This paper refers to Mandela’s speech after the declaration and was a follow up regarding what was happening regarding apartheid in South Africa. Since then the UN passed many resolutions regarding apartheid. In 1976 the UN Centre against apartheid was created. Prior to Mandela’s speech in 1990, the General Assembly adopted the â€Å"Declaration on Apartheid and its Destructive Consequences in South Africa†. This declaration called for negotiations between all parties to end apartheid and create a democracy free from racial discrimination. Nelson Mandela is the person giving the speech to the Special Committee against Apartheid. He is giving the speech because even though the journey to stop apartheid had began through UN efforts, he believed that nothing much was happening in South Africa especially after the declaration by the UN General Assembly in December 1989. The speech was made to the Special Committee against Apartheid in New York in June 1990. The audience included the permanent representative and Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, the President of the UN General Assembly, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Excellencies and permanent representatives of the UN and Heads and Observer Missions. The audience represented people from around the world who were member states of the United Nations. This was a forum of member states of the United Nations and a great opportunity for Nelson Mandela to explain the oppressiveness of Apartheid to the world.

Evaluation of Dental Education Strategies Essay

Evaluation of Dental Education Strategies - Essay Example This paper stresses that the medical and dental education demanded new teaching – learning methods with more formal instructional design and delivery. In professional education like medical and dental education, the common teaching strategies include that of role model, small or large group interactions, lectures, one to one teaching, brainstorming, computer aided case studies and patient model exercise. Among these methods, for clinical teaching, the preferred teaching methods are role model, one to one instruction, small group discussions and patient model assessment. Based on the survey feedback from students, this case study aims to identify the most effective teaching method. Thus the single major aim of this case study is to find out the best teaching method in dental education – whether is it one to one direct teaching? or is it small group discussion teaching? The article also states that the teaching skills need to be developed by a doctor and he / she should b e a competent teacher. The following personal attributes are quoted for a competent and committed medical teacher by Judy and Carol, commitment to profession, enthusiasm, sensitive to needs of students, inculcating the required professional attitude within the students, developing practical teaching skills, interest in serving as doctor as well as a teacher, openness to peer review and change his or her teaching, ability to implement formal assessment of medical students and trainees.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phones Essay Example for Free

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phones Essay Mobile phones are really very important in our lives that we cannot think a life without them. It is a long-range, portable electronic device used for mobile communication. Mobile phones are affordable, easy to use and comfortable. The mobile phones have become crucial part of our life. There are facts which prove this. They have replaced the wrist watches or the alarm clocks at home as we can see time in them wherever we are and also set alarms in them. †¢ When you are stressed you can listen to the music from in-built music player. You can also listen to the radio in these mobile phones. †¢ Various mobile phones come with high resolution megapixel cameras ranging from 1.3 to 8 megapixels. Mobile phones because of their varied multi-function capabilities have replaced many other devices. However Studies have shown mobile phone radiation does produce biological changes in humans – such as changes in brain temperature and activity as well as blood pressure changes. Also there is evidence indicating that microwave radiation from mobile phones may cause serious diseases and disturbances in the physiology. This includes an increased cancer risk and genetic damage, disturbed brain function and other effects. Moreover mobile phones while driving is a distraction that brings risk of road traffic accidents. In conclusion, I believe although there are disadvantages of using mobile phones the advantages are more. They have completely intruded in our lives and have made their own unique stand. Once it was considered as luxury is now the thing closest to our hearts.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt :: essays research papers

Franklin Delano Rooesvelt   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This essay will focus on the life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt devoted much of his later years in life to help the needy. As president, Roosevelt passed as many bills, lobbing for as much congressional support as he could get to aid him in his attempts to help the unemployed, starving and poor people that society had forgotten. President Roosevelt has often been called the most beneficial president that America has had in the twentieth century, some may argue that he was the best president since Lincoln. Roosevelt truly dedicated his life to humanitarian efforts worldwide, never stopping to take a break until his unfortunate early death.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Never in the history of the United States had there ever been such a terrible, long-lasting, economic depression then the one that began just before President Roosevelt ran for his first presidential election. Thirteen million people were out of work, about one quarter of the working age population and cities - as well as states - were losing money fast, as there were no taxes to be collected. Schools were closed because the states did not have enough money to fund them and people were homeless and starving; living - and dying - on the very streets where just a few years ago America experienced its first economic boom. This sets the stage for the most triumphant presidency this country has ever seen. Triumphant not only over the war that was to follow but also over economic as well as social barriers. It would be nothing short of the truth to say that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his staff saved this country from total economic collapse. President Roosevelt’s heritage traces all the way back to our great nation’s colonial times. Being of Dutch and English ancestry, his ancestor, Klaes Martensen had been a Dutch immigrant, settling in New York in 1645. Almost two hundred years later, on January 30, 1882, Franklin Delano was born. Both of his parents had come from upper-class families. His father, James Roosevelt was the vice president of the Delaware and Hudson Railway Company. Franklin lived a life almost all would envy, growing up about 100 miles north of New York City on his parents’ Hyde Estate. The estate, totaling about 100 acres in size overlooked the Hudson River and had a breathtaking view of the Catskill mountains. He led a good life, going to well-renound private schools then graduating, to attend Harvard and later Colombia Law School.

We Are Made of Star Stuff

We are â€Å"star stuff†. Discuss in detail our connections to the stars as established by modern astronomy. Modern astronomy has allowed us to understand how the universe functions and also provides the answers to some of the big questions. Questions like the origin of the universe and origin of life itself. It tells us that stars are the cosmic furnaces where all most all the building blocks of life and planets were synthesized. Lighter, basic and abundant elements like hydrogen and helium were formed during the Big Bang.During Big Bang, space expansion cooled the early energy dominated universe and a lot of energy transformed into matter. These basic elements were then able to create the early stars and also the stars of today. Inside of these stars lighter elements fused to release large quantities of energy and in the process of doing that converted hydrogen and helium into heavier elementary particles. Such elements would be deposited in the core of the star and are spew ed out into surrounding interstellar space when the star dies an explosive death. These newly synthesized heavy elements are essential for life to begin and evolve. 1 Hydrogen, helium and a little bit of lithium were made in the Big Bang. Hydrogen, the most abundant element accounted for around 75% of the matter, followed by helium at 25%. 2 Large quantity of these primordial gas formed clouds and such clouds were then condensed by local gravity to form the very first stars that lit up the dark skies of early universe. 3 As the baby stars contracted, temperature in the core rose to extreme level triggering nuclear fusion/hydrogen fusion.Nuclear fusion is a process in which two or more atoms fuse to synthesize heavier atom and this process of fusing releases large quantities of energy. 4 All the ingredients/elements needed to make the earth and all life forms on earth were created in the cores of stars. 5 These ingredients are then released out of the core of star into the surrounding when the giant star dies an explosive death known as the supernovae. This phenomenon occurs only to stars that are very big. Elements of up to iron can be made in a star and heavier than iron elements are produced in the supernovae. At least six of these essential elements compose life on earth and they are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorous. 8 Almost all life forms on earth are carbon based. This applies to the smallest living organisms (with exception of the new Inner core of a star7 discovery of arsenic based bacteria) to the biggest – the blue whale and all the living plants. They all have the same basic building blocks in their DNA. 9 Those building blocks are the essential elements. All of the rocky and metallic materials that made up our planet, the iron that runs in our blood, the calcium in our teeth and bones10, oxygen atoms that form water after combining with hydrogen, and, nitrogen and oxygen atoms that make up most of the atmosphere of earth are all products of stars billions of years ago. 11 As you can see in the picture above all of the heavier elements (above H and He) and including helium are made by the stars. The elements shown on the cross-section of the picture form heavier elements, they make up all the elements we discovered so far; the elements on the periodic table.Stars begin its life mostly made out of hydrogen and helium. The breakdown of hydrogen and helium in our sun is seventy percent and twenty eight when it started its life. 12 The building of heavier elements begins with hydrogen. Hydrogen is taken four at a time to form a single atom of helium. This process goes on for ninety percent of a stars’ life. When a star runs out of hydrogen, it starts fusing helium atoms to stay alive (producing energy to fight its own immense gravity from causing itself to collapse). Three atoms of helium are fused in the process of nuclear fusion to form an atom of carbon. As the process of fusing moves to n ext heavier atoms the duration of fusion process of newer atom becomes a lot shorter because for fusing atoms higher than hydrogen the number of available atoms for fusing is far fewer than the number atoms available when the star was fusing hydrogen for example. Next in line is oxygen. Adding one more helium to the carbon makes oxygen. Nitrogen is also made in the stars. 12 Without oxygen life as we know cannot survive. This process goes onto making silicon and iron. Nuclear fusion stops at iron because temperatures in star don’t reach high enough to fuse iron.So how do the elements heavier than iron form? The answer to this question lies in the size of the star. Only big stars (much bigger that our sun) are capable of producing a supernovae. Only such a catastrophic explosion can break the boundary set by iron and produce heavier atoms to fill the rest of the periodic table of elements. From the dusts and particles leftover of dead stars combined together to form asteroids and comets. Asteroids clumped together can form planet core. So life on earth basically began with the basic material that was available. These material/large molecules essential for the formation of living cells are proteins, carbohydrates (sugar), fats, and nucleic acids. It’s been found that meteorites contains essential stuff like amino acids (proteins made of amino acid), sugars, fatty acids (building block of fats), and bases for nucleic acids. For instance, the Murchison meteorite that crashed in Australia in 1969 is found to contain chains of fatty acids, different types of sugars, all five nucleic acid bases, and more than 70 kinds of amino acids (life forms use only 20 amino acids). 3 â€Å"We are star stuff â€Å"in the unforgettable words of Dr. Carl Sagan. The atoms that made up our bodies are created in the innards of stars that died many aeons ago. The planet we live on is made up materials like iron, silicon and carbon, etc are all forged in the natureâ€℠¢s grandest factory we know as stars. The air we breathe to stay alive is a product of stars. Stars also nourish life. The sun ray helps plants with photosynthesis; helps them break down carbon dioxide into organic compounds (sugars). Plants are a major source of food for humans and other creatures.Over the past few centuries (mainly 1900-2000) astronomy has made many eye opening discoveries; about the origin of the whole universe, our fate, and that we human are not the centre of the universe. It encourages humility in us and makes us better understand our connections the cosmos. References 1. Carl Sagan (No Date). Effects of Prozac essays

Effects of Prozac essays Peter D. Kramer, M.D. tells of his first experience with Prozac involving a woman named Tess. Tess was the eldest of 10 children, born to a passive mother and an alcoholic father. Tess was physically and sexually abused as a child. When Tess was 12 her father dies and her mother entered a clinical depression from which she never recovered. Tess was then left to take over the family. Later in life Tess made a business career out of her skills at driving, inspiring, and nurturing others. She was very unhappy in her personal life. Tess struggled from one abusive married man to another. Despite psychotherapy, she was progressively less energetic and more unhappy. Dr. Kramer's first visit with Tess showed she had all the symptoms of clinical depression and she wanted to end her life. Dr. Kramer prescribed Prozac for Tess to terminate her depression and return her to her "premorbid self." Dr. Kramer's goal was to not transform Tess but to restore her. Two weeks after using Prozac, Tess reported she was no longer feeling weary. She confessed she had been depleted of energy for as long as she could remember and realized she had been depressed all her life. Tess once again was able to get her social life back. Dr. Kramer took Tess off Prozac after nine months and she continued to do well. Tess did admit she didn't seem as sharp or energetic after discontinuing the medicine. Then, after about eight months off Prozac, Tess felt she was slipping. She liked the feeling of stability that Prozac gave her. Dr. Kramer was then left to decide whether or not to prescribe Prozac to a patient who was not depressed. Again on Prozac, Tess responded as she had hoped, self-assurance, renewed confidence, and social comfort. Not all patients on Prozac respond this way. Some are unaffected, some merely recover from depression as they ...

Torism, rituals and food Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Torism, rituals and food - Essay Example Tourism is mostly positively related to rituals. Wherever there is a ritual, there are likely to be tourists. This is because rituals give tourists exactly what they are looking for – a deep cultural experience.. Nevertheless, not all travel has such profound meaning. If the travel and the on-site experience is largely activity orientated, it could be the case that there is no chance for Arnold van Gennep’s sacred ‘away-ness’ of those who travel from home. The typical package holiday could be an excellent example of a trip with limited, or no overt symbolic meaning (Burns, 1999). Food is life†, says Robert Poor (2001). This adage came to life when I visited Delhi, a colorful city in the middle of an even colorful country, India. In this essay, I will talk about the ritual of Eid-ul-Adha, a ritual celebrated by Muslims for its religious values. The central, most remarkable attraction of Bari Eid (or the Big Eid) is food. The central, most remarkable pu rpose of it is to give away, share and sacrifice. Therefore, to see how Muslims sacrifice animals and give them away is what attracts tourism in Islamic countries at that time of the year. Ritual. What is a ritual? David Floyd defines it as a patterned, repetitive, and symbolic enactment of a cultural belief or value; its primary purpose is transformation (Grimes, 2002). Why do people perform these repetitive, almost ceremonial acts? People perform them because tradition prescribes it. ... Philosophy without religion becomes meaningless. Religion without rituals becomes insipid. The rituals of a religion, like the husk of a seed, preserve its life and make it germinate. It is only when the rituals are separated from the faith and assumes an independent existence that they become mechanical and lifeless. (Understanding Hinduism) Eid-ul-Adha Muslims celebrate two Eids annually; Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. The first one follows the month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast. The second one marks the end of the Pilgrimage to Mecca and is celebrated in the month of Zilhajj, an Islamic month that follows the lunar calendar. On this Eid, an animal in sacrificed in the honor of Abraham's sacrifice of his son. The essential significance of this festival is the spirit of sacrifice (qurbani) in memory of Abraham's great act of faith many centuries ago. (Gilchrist, 2001) The day starts off with a prayer that is scheduled for early morning. The men go to mosques while the women stay home and thank their Lord for all he has given along with the ability to sacrifice. After the prayer, the process of Qurbani or sacrifice starts. People buy domestic animals such as sheep, goats, cows and even camels a few days before the big day. They feed them and take care of them. On Eid, they sacrifice them. This process continues throughout the day and night for some people but for me, the goat was set to be halaaled just before 10:00 am.After the sacrifice, the meat is distributed amongst friends and the needy. People cook this meat in a variety of ways and invite friends and family over to share the occasion. By afternoon, I tasted the first bite of my sacrificed meat. The menu had a variety of scrumptious delicacies. I noticed that the meat was

CHLAMYDIA AMONG TEENS AND YOUTH Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

CHLAMYDIA AMONG TEENS AND YOUTH - Essay Example The other important skills include being able to recognize pressures from other people and to resist them, deal with and challenge prejudice, seek help from adults including parents, carers and professionals through the family, community and health and welfare services. Sex education equip young people with the skills to be able to differentiate between accurate and inaccurate information, discuss a range of moral and social issues and perspectives on sex and sexuality, including different cultural attitudes and sensitive issues like sexuality, abortion and contraception. It is widely accepted that young people have a right to sex education, because it is a means by which they are helped to protect themselves against abuse, exploitation, unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases such as Clamydia and HIV/AIDS. Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis. Even though symptoms of chlamydia are usually mild or absent, serious complications that cause irreversible damage, including infertility, can occur "silently" before a woman ever recognizes a problem. The bacteria can move from one person to another through sexual intercourse, and possibly through oral-genital contact. If someone touches bodily fluids that contain the bacteria and then touches his or her eye, a chlamydial eye infection is possible. (Stamm W E, 1999) It is difficult for a girl to know whether she has chlamydia because most girls do not have any symptoms. Chlamydia causes an unusual vaginal discharge or pain during urination. Some girls with Chlamydia also have pain in their lower abdomens, pain during sexual intercourse, or bleeding between menstrual periods. Sometimes a Chlamydia infection can cause a mild fever, muscle aches, or headache. Like a girl, a guy can also have a difficult time telling whether he has chlamydia. Some guys may have a discharge from the tip of the penis, the urethra where urine comes out, or experience itching or burning sensations around the penis. Rarely, the testicles become swollen. Chlamydia bacteria live in vaginal fluid and in semen. About 70 percent of Chlamydial infections have no symptoms. It is very common among teenagers and young adults. At present chlamydia affects between 3 and 4 million people a year. It can be very harmful to women because it can lead to sterility. The infection can spread up the fallopian tubes and leaves scar tissue there so an egg can't get through. If this happens a woman can never get pregnant in her uterus. This also increases the risk of an ectopic also known as tubal pregnancy, which is a pregnancy that cannot be completed. This is a serious medical condition and if a tubal pregnancy ruptures one can die. Most at risk groups for Chlamydia are teenagers who actually have the highest rate in the country. Sixteen to 24 year olds have much higher rates than adults and that's both boys and girls. It's alarming because it portends the future health of the kids. And Chlamydia hits teens and young adults hard. More than one out of 25 people ages 18 to 26 are infected with Chlamydia. The infection rate is slightly higher among women, according to the May issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Chlamydia is known as a 'silent' disease because about three quarters of infected women and about half of infected men have no symptoms.

The March That Started a Movement Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

The March That Started a Movement - Case Study Example Time has come to praise the contribution King made to free the African American community from the slavery they were forced into for years by their white oppressors. This essay is significant for those who live in third world countries, in the end giving them the faith that, one day, they will also become strong leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. King was a minister from Alabama, who would later become the leading voice of the civil rights movement. For that, he traveled across the country, simultaneously arranging protests and marches to bring attention to the fight which African Americans faced on a day-to-day basis. Like many before him who had sought to end social prejudice and injustice, King was thrown in jail on several times; throughout the ordeal he sustained a personal viewpoint of peacefulness as a means of succeeding. He thought that taking a combative attitude would perhaps just formulate things of inferior quality, with the accurate way to success being achieved through avocation of both truth and acceptance. King is perhaps most famous for his approach during the Civil Rights Movement. He too would be impacted by the events of the movement, or by means of eminence at rest become diehard. In fact King and Quaid i.e azam were the best symbols of the historic civil rights movements of the 20th century which serve d to enhance the lives for a greater part of the world's common people. They established the efficiency of diplomatic tactics and by this means were able to help to decrease the violence and hate, with the purpose of triumphing over colonialism, as well as officially imposed cultural unfairness. In 1962, frustration had become widespread in African American communities throughout the country. The African American unemployment rate was twice as high in comparison to the rate of whites and sadly, major human rights reforms had not yet been accomplished. Asa Philip Randolph, labor leader and founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, had labeled the suggestion of a march as a need "for jobs and freedom." One of the most essential points of the march was the demand that Congress be interested in the process leading towards the anticipation of civil rights legislation. Negroes had become irritated by continued unfairness. Their definitive ambition was total, unqualified freedom for themselves. The mainstream white progressives were heated by the rough treatment given to the African American community. The march in the beginning was considered to be an affair, which would serve to remedy the distressed circumstances faced by the blacks in the South, along with an excepti onally free break on the road to placing organizers' concerns, as well as their objections, squarely before the seat of power in the nation's capital. They proceeded to condemn the federal government not being in favor of human rights and corporeal shelter of civil rights workers and blacks that lived, by and large, in the South. On the other hand, the factions did submit to presidential demands and authority of the Executive branch of government. Historically, most would consider the March on Washington as an especially momentous occurrence, not just in the United States, but the rest of the world as well. In excess of 250,000 people came to Washington in their bid to insist that equal opportunity for blacks are given and that Congress must

The Importance Of Being Earnest Essay Example for Free

The Importance Of Being Earnest Essay Rather than respecting the society of the situation, Oscar Wilde mocks Victorian attitudes towards death within Act 2. How far do you agree with this view? In this coursework I will be focusing on act 2 of the play an importance of being earnest. The play consists of a mixture of several themes, one of them being death. During act 2 there are many different situations were Oscar Wide mocks Victorian attitudes towards death. This is shown in several of ways which I will discus thought this coursework. From the start of Act 2 we are able to judge the traits of the characters in much more detail and see what their character is like. During the very first conversation in the play (between Algernon and Jack) we are able to realise that the characters in the play are careless in their actions and views. This theme continues throughout the entire play, evident in the ridiculously comical and odd comments made by the characters, their odd and reserved mannerisms and their general air. The Importance of Being Earnest may seem to the audience to be a play that’s pretty much meaningless and trivialities. To follow this, the author himself described the play to be ‘a trivial comedy for several people’. More the less the comedy does contain satire which is delicate enough that most of the audience fail to recognise them. This could be seen as a weakness of the play as satire is a way that writers tend to use in order to bring a change whether in life or society. Death is acknowledged on several of occasions throughout the complete play. It is one of the main themes of the play. The way in which death is continuously presented by the characters is by their dismissive comments and spontaneous joke. The initial thought that could develop in the audience whilst realising the occurrence of death being mentioned in the play is to give it dimension as well as some dark humour encouraging death which could be considered offensive and shocking to the readers. However none the less the play also highlights and compliments the light-hearted and jokey theme that is apparent during the whole play. Bunbury is a character created by Algernon. This allows Algernon to escape social engagement. Bunbury as a whole is a person who provokes most conversations about ‘death’. This is the fictional character of Bunbury, a sickly, invalid friend. It creates conflicts between Algernon and Lady Bracknell conversations as, she seems rather offended by the fact that he keeps living, even with an illness and seems, convinced he should die out of courtesy to others. This is clearly vivid at one point when Algernon rejects to a dinner invitation in a polite manner in order to visit unwell Bunbury. During this act Lady Bracknell states, I must say, Algernon, that I think it is high time that Mr Bunbury made up his mind whether he was going to live or to die. This shilly-shallying with the question is absurd (Act 1, part 2). This is rather comical as most of the characters discuss death being something an individual has control over, not seeing that death is a final decision which has no coming back neither any sort of control. This is proven by the quote stated above said by Lady Bracknell. Subsequently the characters in The Importance of Being Earnest do not act in a manner that is appropriate or socially acceptable in modern time. The reason being is that their view on death as a group is extremely unsympathetic. The characters see death as an insignificant matter and they often misuse it in the play to avoid on the spot situations mainly involving interrogations. To the characters in the play death is shown less serious than other issues for example the consumption of cucumber sandwiches versus buttered bread which represented the theme homosexuality. They fail to see that death is a situation to show sorrow and sympathy for those who have happened to pass on, it is treated as no more importance and is given no value compared to the other themes in the play. There are numerous occasions where Oscar Wilde shows death being a mockery by the disvaluing attitudes of the characters. Another instance during the play which relates back to death is when Jack is asking Lady Bracknell for Gwendolens hand in marriage and she interrogates him on his past and certain aspects of his personality, this is when she asks him who his parents are and he describes to her that he was an orphan, found in a handbag in the cloakroom of Victoria Station. On hearing this statement Lady Bracknell gets very offended that a person who doesn’t know of his parents and has no clear background has come to ask her for her daughters hand in marriage. Lady Bracknell states ‘to lose both (parents) looks like carelessness, (Act one, part 2) blaming Jack himself for having been abandoned. This shows that Lady Bracknell doesn’t sympathize with the fact that he has late parents and is an orphan however is more offended due to the fact that he has come to ask for her daughter’s without a having any background status or knowledge. Overall thought the importance of Being Earnest, I believe that Oscar Wilde mainly emphasises on the act of dying being a comical theme. He clearly indicates the Victorian attitudes being very unsympathetic and mocking upon death rather than respecting the values and sobriety of the situation. The main message shown in this comedy is that people who are ill are better out of the way, and those who are orphaned are unfortunate but probably deserved it. There is no need for grieving or memorials, for those who have passed on and in fact hold no importance. This as a whole indicates that such immoral behaviour shown by someone is considered to be mentally unstable therefore it reflects on the mentalities of the characters of the play. Oscar Wilde shows a group of individuals view to be very cold and light hearted as they portray ‘death’ being just a black comedy, whereas in actual fact death is one of the most heart breaking life events.

Love :: essays research papers

When you think of your past love, you may view it as a failure. But when you find a new love, you view the past as a teacher. In the game of love, it doesn`t really matter who won or who lost. What is important is you know when to hold on and when to let go... You know you really love someone when you want him or her to be happy, even if his or her happiness means that you`re not a part of it. Everything happens for the best. If the person you love doesnt love you back, dont be afraid to love someone else again for you`ll never know unless you give it a try. You`ll never love a person you love unless you risk for love. Love strives in hurting. If you dont get hurt, you don`t learn how to love. Love doesnt hurt all the time. Though the hurting is still there to test you, to help you grow. Dont find love, let love find you. That`s why its called falling in love because you dont force yourself to fall. You just fall... You cannot finisha book without closing its chapters. If you want to go on, then you have toleave the past as you turn the pages. Love is not destroyed by a single failure or won by a single caress. It is a lifetime venture in which we are alwayslearning, discovering, and growing. The great ironyof life is letting gowhen you need to hold on and holding on when you need to let go. We lose someone we love only when we are destined to find someone else who can love us even more thn we can loveourselves. On falling out of love, take some time to heal and then get back on the horse. But dont ever make the same mistake of riding the same one that threw you the first time. To love is to risk rejection; to live is to risk dying; to hope is to risk failure. But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. To reach for another is to risk involvment; to expose your feelings is to expose trueself; to love is to risk not to be love in return. How to define love: fall but not stumble, be constant but not too persistent, share and never be unfair, understand and try not to demand, hurt but never keep the pain.

Recruitment & Selcetion M1 Essay

In this task I am going to create an information sheet which will compare the purposes of the different documents used within the recruitment and selection process. Person specification: The purpose of the person specification is to provide details about the type of person required such as attributes, personality for example qualifications. The person specification often includes Knowledge and Skills Experience, Personal, attributes, Interests and qualifications. Job description: The purpose of the job description is to provide information to potential employees about what the job involves such as the purpose, responsibilities and duties. Job advertisement: The purpose of a job advertisement is to find one or more individuals to fill a specific job opening. Companies usually target specific types of individuals when placing job advertisements, as they want to find the most-qualified applicants. Person specification vs. Job description: A difference between the person specification and a job description is the job description is created to inform the applicant about the job itself, for example it contains information on the responsibilities and duties of the job. Whereas the person specification is more of a skill list that an employer creates to ensure they only get people who are applying who have the correct skills, attributes and qualifications. A similarity between the person specification and a job description is the purpose, they are both created by the employer for the same reason, they are both used to short list employees, and also used within the interview process to help determine whether they are suitable for the job. Person specification vs. Job advertisement: A difference between a job advert and the person specification is the job advert is created to advertise a job and to attract suitable people to apply for the vacancy whereas a person specification is the criteria that must be met in order for an applicant to be considered. A similarity of a job advert and a person specification is both give an overview of the skills that the  applicant must have. The difference is the job advert only gives a brief list of skills that are wanted. However the person specification goes into a lot more details by splitting the skills and qualifications into two different categories , the two different categories are desirable and essential skills. Job description vs. Job advertisement: I compared the job description and a job advertisement, I found one key difference between them. The key difference is the purpose, the job advert is created by the employer and is used to attract people to apply for the job whereas the job description is used to inform candidates about the job and responsibilities, the job description is also used to help short list candidates by using it to cross reference with their CV. I also found one key similarity between the job advert and job description is both give a brief overview of the job, including the main responsibilities and duties, the only difference is the job description goes into a lot more detail, it includes more information such as working hour or wages.

Operations Management Problem Exercises Essay

McBurger’s fast-food restaurant has a drive-through window with a single server who takes orders from an intercom and also is the cashier. The window operator is assisted by other employees who prepare the orders. Customers arrive at the ordering station prior to the drive-through window every 3.6 minutes (exponentially distributed) and the service time is 2.4 minutes (exponentially distributed). Merchant Of Venice By William Shakespeare Essays - Film, Literature

Merchant Of Venice By William Shakespeare Essays - Film, Literature Merchant Of Venice By William Shakespeare In the Dukes opinion (Act iv, Sc.1) Shylock is an inhuman wretch. Do you agree? Do you feel that Shylock receives, justice at the end of the play? The Merchant Of Venice was written by William Shakespeare, between 1596 and 1598. It was first published in 1600. Although this play is described as a romantic comedy, there is an underlying plot of moral dimension in the development of Shylocks character. Shylock is a Jew and at this time Jews were the focus of much racial prejudice and repression. In fact the Jewish community in the middle ages suffered huge prejudice. Jews were associated mainly with money lending, as Christians could not lend money at interest to other Christians. Shakespeares portrayal of Shylock and Tubal is based on common prejudice and ignorance tempered by his own liberal tolerance. This racial prejudice is relevant within the play because is justifies the behaviour of shylock. It is this prejudice that sets the plot and is a major theme within The Merchant Of Venice. Antonio who is supposed to be a hero is portrayed as a self- righteous prig at times. Portia who might be expected to play a timid heiress is in fact shown as a strong-minded woman, and Shylock is represented as a tragic outsider. Shylock is a moneylender. He follows the Jewish religion and has a house in Venice. He lives with his daughter and is a widower. It is not easy to see Shylock as a straightforward villain though, despite the fact that when we first meet him, this is what he appears to be. The Duke calls Shylock an inhuman wretch. The Dukes greeting for Antonio is warm, but he damns Shylock with great forcefulness. What The Duke does here is enforce the audiences views of Shylock. Notwithstanding his jaundiced view of Shylock, the Duke tries to reason with him, and attempts to play upon his feelings of comparison and mercy for a fellow human being. Everybody including Tubal hates Shylock. In Act 3 SC.1, Tubal winds up Shylock about his daughter leaving him for as Christian, and taking the families treasures. Any sympathy that the audience may have for Shylock as a result of his impassioned speech quickly evaporates as they listen to him rail against his daughter. His only concerns are for his Ducats, his jewels and now more ominously, his revenge. Thou stickst a dagger in me. I shall never see my gold again- Fourscore Ducats at a sitting! Fourscore Ducats This tells us that he is extremely greedy and he has more concerns over his wealth than his own daughter. Is this the act of a human being or of an inhuman wretch? We learn that even Jessica despises her own father. Jessica acquaints us with her unhappiness at home because of her father. The fact that Shylock is a lone figure in the play is underlined by the fact that even his own daughter is ashamed of him. Jessica is ashamed because of the way that Shylock acts towards everyone in the play. As I have said, everyone hates Shylock but even his own daughter does! She describes the house they live in as hell. What we must ask is, what does this suggest about Shylock being a father? If he cannot show any emotion as a father, surely he cannot then be human. Shylock is racist. Even in the opening scenes there is evidence for this. For example in Act 1 Sc.3, shylock thinks to himself: I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, walk with you, and so following: but I will not eat with you, drink with you, nor pray with you This shows us his true feelings towards the Christians, and hints to us of his bloodthirsty revenge that he longs to take on Antonio. Probably the subtlest view of his racism is when he says: I hat you for you are a Christian. This surely shows us his true racist feelings deep inside of him. He openly admits to the people he talks to that he hates them because of their religion. Shylock is very cruel; his desire for Antonios flesh is almost a lust. He shows no mercy for Antonio, it now

- Introduction Essays (1689 words) - Economy, Business, Logistics

- Introduction Essays (1689 words) - Economy, Business, Logistics - Introduction Nowadays, if a logistics company want to maintain a competitive advantage in the logistics industry, it requires providing better and reliable service by using different kinds of logistics software and programs. In addition, customer further improves the requirements of everything like speed, accuracy, clear information etc due to Information Technology is fully developed and still keep improving. Thus, in every process of logistics need a specialized method to handle. However, we have found that there are still a lot of complaint about some logistics company especially the part of the delivery. It seems to be a real common problem in this industry. Therefore, we have chosen the one major problem of one company and the company is "S.F. Express". This is a large express company in China. This company has a huge service network not only the area of china but also overseas. - Company's problem As there are some complaints from the customers of the SF Express, they claimed that the company always deliver their wanted items to the wrong address. For example, there is somebody said that he or she asked the stock should be sent to Kwai Fong at 6 pm, but the courier sent it to Chai Wan at 4 p.m. It is a question that the wrong destination is too far from each other, and also the time is not correct. This mistake cannot be accepted as maybe it is the human error without using the information technology , non-fixed format always mislead others to follow the wrong direction . Besides this , there is a security problem on the receipt certification, when a stock comes to us , the company should notice the identity of their customer. This is because that guy who received the stock, but it does not belong to him or her by according to the information of the customer in the receipt . It is a serious problem for everybody that it will be no protection of their stocks if they were stolen by the others during the delivery , or their identity was also stolen to receive the stock, just like the situation in the Legislative Council Election recently , I was voted by someone . This can say that may stock is taken by someone, same as my right of voting is lost in the record. For the example of providing a bad service bad by the SF Express to their customers, is about that someone was clicked the service about to pick up the stock by delivering to the address (especially the resident) to receive and sign the name. However, the company corrected the arrangement of taking the stock of picking up in their stores. That customer was not satisfied since the company neglect the requirements of their costumes and change itself. It makes anyone unacceptable if the situation of asking for something in reason but there is a wrong response for me. In addition, there is some case from my friend that he chose the service of SF Express to send his sports shoes which bought from Taobao before. However, they lost his shoes during the process of transportation (maybe in the warehouse). He felt angry that there is no explanation or some compensation (such as refund and follow up the case) to him, and also deny to have the responsibility for the incident. Therefore, i t is a problem of the missing item by the company, there is no idea to solve it and know the reason why the stock is losing. By summarizing the examples, lack of communication is one the problem find in SF Express, this is because we observe that most of the action we discovered that the company doesn't have any solution to solve the conflicts or mistakes between them and their customers. If this still happens continuously, the image of the company will be bad in public's eyes. We also find that transparency is not clear enough to let the costumers know more about the information about the status of their cargo, such as the location for tracking a stock in real time. Some other persons said that his cargo always on the same situation when he received it, by

Linda Loman and the Cult of Domesticity In Arthur Millers Death of a Essay

Linda Loman and the Cult of Domesticity In Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman - Essay Example Miller's archetypal portrayal of Linda Loman therefore represents both a general example and a figurehead for her social status: lower middle class suburban white domestics. Alienated from her husband Willy, Linda tries to accommodate his role of the head of household, despite the fact that she must see to the actual running and repair of the home. She accepts a subordinate role and lives vicariously through his dreams: as Miller describes her "she admires him his massive dreams and little cruelties (are) reminders of the turbulent longings within him which she shares but lacks the temperament to utter and follow" (Miller 12). With her dreams confined to the house and her life defined by what her husband can provide, it is no surprise that Linda constantly seeks to support Willy self-image and delusions while attempting to create a level of harmony between him and their two children. Paradoxically, these same restraints of patriarchy and cult of domesticity drive Willy's motivations as well, for he is obliged to both be the provider and secure a sheltered reality for Linda safe from the outside world. Thus, Linda's fate is completely entwined with Willy's. She ultimately symbolizes the model of many domestic ideals yet at the same time provides a warning to women everywhere of the dangers inherent in being sheltered from the rest of society. To fully understand the extent with which Linda's psychology has been entrapped, one must first examine both the tenets of the cult of domesticity (COD) and then the methods with which these qualities were reinforced by society. The COD is framed by four main elements: domesticity, submissiveness, purity, and piety. While this last element in not overtly present in the play (given that the general religion of America is regarded as Protestant Christianity), it is present through the concept of faith, through Willy's faith in the Business World, Linda's faith in her husband, and the faith of both in the established order of the family unit. It is the slow erosion of these faiths' that bring about the psychological crises in the plot. Linda is generally regarded by family members as 'pure' in sexual experience and fidelity, as exhibited by the boys using her for a model of their ideal wives and by Willy's concern in providing for her (her faithfulness constantly provoking guilt over h is own infidelity). Likewise, while other female characters in the play are strong and independent depictions, they are suspicious in that they have broken away from the traditional domestic role. As such, they are morally questionable, with an aura of promiscuity about them illustrated all the more by Willy's affair and by the boys frequent conquests. Linda completely fulfills the qualification of submissiveness, through such examples as removing Willy's shoes for him in the very first scene, to pandering to his ego by calling him "the handsomest man in the world.." (Miller 37). The COD has instilled women with the notion that they need a "protector;" it is therefore Linda's role to not only see to her husband's every comfort while at home, but she must also bolster him mentally and emotionally so that he can go out and face the world. As far as domestic rule, Linda is revealed to be in charge of the actual operation

Work Based Integrated Project - Essay Example As a young Muslim female growing up in the u.k, my parents always have been very protective and kept me grounded. Morals and values have had a huge impact on my life because my parents have been brought up in a traditional Muslim way, were they raised in Iraq they brought me up the same way their parents have been bought up the tradition Muslim way for example dressing in a modest way and wearing a scarf (the hijab). This is something that has come natural to me and I often have to explain to people what it is and why I wear it and to be honest its made me the woman I’m today, its part of my identity and I will never change it. Obviously being a Muslim girl, it usually restricts us to a certain way of life we live in and living in the UK is such an eye opener to everything. However I have such strong beliefs and challenging the western ideologies wasn't an issue growing up, under the influence of my parents i was on track with religion as well as being modernized. I have alway s wanted to make something out of me, it will be very common if i just accepted in getting married at the age of 16 to a young Muslim man but that was not what I wanted for myself, I’m a very confident and passionate young women wanting to be successful, its my goal to follow my dreams and be very wealthy and proud be able to say I did it, for taking radio after my degree is what I want to do for definite.
